BB see: Transparency legislation and public discussions of wage inequality Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie (IF 0.806) Pub Date : 2021-02-10 Christina Treleaven, Sylvia Fuller
Disparities in compensation persist between men and women. Wage transparency, which enables workers to compare their compensation to what others receive in their organization, can be an important tool for redressing specific intra‐firm disparities tied to discriminatory processes. Drawing on newspaper reports about gender pay differentials, we provide the first analysis of whether a public disclosure

Does higher education make a difference? The influence of educational attainment on women's and men's nonstandard employment outcomes Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie (IF 0.806) Pub Date : 2021-02-24 Katelyn Mitri
Some studies suggest that women and the less educated are more likely to be employed in nonstandard work. However, conflicting evidence has indicated that temporary, part‐time, and nonstandard self‐employment has diffused across different social groups and levels of education. Using pooled data from the 1997–2018 Canadian Labour Force Surveys, this study explores the changing relationship between higher

Smartphone and social media addiction: Exploring the perceptions and experiences of Canadian teenagers Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie (IF 0.806) Pub Date : 2021-02-18 Michael Adorjan, Rosemary Ricciardelli
“Addiction” to internet‐connected technology continues to dominate media discourses of young people. Researchers have identified negative outcomes, including decreased mental health, resulting from anxieties related to technology, e.g., a fear of missing out and social connectivity related to online technologies. Not enough is known, however, regarding young people's own responses to these ideas. This

Comparaison des représentations des amish et des mormons fondamentalistes (FLDS) dans deux téléréalités américaines Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie (IF 0.806) Pub Date : 2021-02-18 Raphaël Mathieu Legault‐Laberge, Mathilde Vanasse‐Pelletier
This research explores the representations of two minority religions in United States, the Amish and the fundamentalist Mormons (FLDS), in two reality shows produced in 2013: Breaking Amish and Breaking the Faith. To which extent these reality shows contribute to reinforce stereotypes about these minority religions? The hypothesis postulates that there is a convergence in the representations of minority

Patterns and stratification of stressor exposure among Canadian workers Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie (IF 0.806) Pub Date : 2021-02-18 Vesna Pajovic, Kim M. Shuey
This research note identifies patterns of stressor exposure among Canadian workers, their stratification by occupational and socio‐demographic factors, and their relationship to high self‐reported work stress. Using latent class analysis and data from the Canadian Community Health Survey we examine the intersection of six stressors, identifying five distinct patterns (Few stressors, Multiple stressors

Voice and Listening in Social Media Facilitated Activist Collectives Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie (IF 0.806) Pub Date : 2020-11-06 Delia Dumitrica
This paper examines the articulation of Canadian civic culture from below. Focusing on digitally mediated grassroots mobilizations, it asks how citizens construct and discursively deploy voice and listening as civic values. The paper draws from three empirical cases: the 2014 mobilization of parents during the teachers’ strike in British Columbia; the 2015 citizen mobilizations in support of Syrian

The COVID‐19 pandemic created rapid, wide‐ranging, and significant disruptions to work and family life. Using data from 1,234 Canadian parents in different‐sex relationships, we compare retrospective reports of perceived sharing in how housework and childcare tasks were split prior to the declaration

The opposition, which came from diverse groups—religious, experts, politicians—led to polarizing debates about the social acceptability of this measure. Our finding shows that the so‐called lay citizens refused to leave the discussion to experts and politicians

This study's exhaustive content analysis (N = 538) examines how Canada's mainstream news media covered the nascent yellow vest movement from the first Canadian protests in December 2018 culminating in the February 2019 cross‐country United We Roll convoy. We demonstrate that Protest Paradigm scholarship does not offer a useful analytic for understanding the coverage of this right‐wing social movement

Several literatures including those focusing on settler colonialism, critical antiracism as well as ethnic studies and sociology more broadly often position racial injustice and genocide as a struggle against whiteness and white supremacy. Second, it designates a dystopian future scenario, in which these repressive elements have massively expanded. Such a formation might develop as part

The theory of family welfare effort is a leading macro-sociological explanation of variation in human fertility. It holds that states which provide universally available, inexpensive, high-quality day care, generous parental leave, and flexible work schedules lower the opportunity cost of motherhood. They thus enable women, especially those in lower socioeconomic strata, to have the number of babies
