Am. Chem. Soc.

Prof. Peng Liu
Peng Liu is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. He received his B.S. degree from Peking University in 2003 and M.Sc. degree from the University of Guelph in 2006. He completed his Ph.D. study and performed postdoctoral research at UCLA. He joined the University of Pittsburgh as an Assistant Professor in 2014 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019 and Full Professor in 2022. He is currently a member of the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute and the Computational Modeling and Simulation program at Pitt. Liu is a computational organic chemist and uses computational tools to study a diverse range of catalytic organic reactions, including transition metal catalysis, polymerization, glycosylation, photoredox catalysis, and biocatalysis with engineered metalloenzymes. He has published over 200 manuscripts. Liu's research accomplishments have been recognized by a number of awards, including the NSF CAREER award (2017), the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry Award for Early Excellence (2018), the NIH Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (2018), Innovation in Education Award (2020), and Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award (2020). Prof. Yang Yang
Dr. Yang obtained a B.S. in Chemistry from Peking University where he performed undergraduate research with Prof. Jianbo Wang. He then received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the guidance of Prof. Stephen Buchwald. At MIT, his research focused on copper-catalyzed asymmetric hydrofunctionalization of simple olefins. As an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow working with Prof. Frances Arnold at the California Institute of Technology, Dr. Yang developed a general enzymatic platform for the asymmetric amination of C(sp3)–H bonds. In 2020, Dr. Yang started an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Yang is a recipient of the Regent’s Junior Faculty Fellowship Award (2021), Faculty Career Development Award (2022), NSF CAREER Award (2022), NIH Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (2022), Thieme Chemistry Journals Award (2023), Army Research Office Young Investigator Award (2023), Packard Fellowship (2023) and Sloan Research Fellowship (2024).
