Lebanese Phoenicianism: Rebutting Anthony Smith's Ethno-Symbolism Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism Pub Date : 2024-02-14 Alexander Maxwell, David Hannah
Examining national awakening in early twentieth-century Lebanon tests the validity of Anthony D. Smith's ethno-symbolism, which argues that modern national movements arise from older or ancient ethnic cores, which Smith calls ethnies. Since ethno-symbolism contradicts Eric Hobsbawm's notion of an “invented tradition,” contrasting Smith with Hobsbawm illustrates the substance of Smith's argument. Supporters

Agency in waiting: innovation and repetition in a novel Turkish Cypriot nationalist commemoration Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism Pub Date : 2024-01-16 Sergen Bahceci
This paper focuses on the Dawn Watch commemoration in northern Cyprus that has been organised since 2010 to mark the anniversary of Turkey's military operation/invasion on 20 July 1974. I argue that the Dawn Watch utilises the innovative ritual practice of ‘keeping watch' to subjectivise participating Turkish Cypriots as the ‘guards/watchmen' who have made Turkey's military presence in Cyprus possible

In light of the high graduate unemployment rate and migrant crisis, graduate employability in the Kurdistan Region – Iraq is an ever more pressing issue. Syrian asylum seekers in Turkey have been trying to adapt to their new life circumstances despite unclear integration and resettlement policies and high levels of discrimination and exclusion. In order to explain memory in divided societies, we apply Ibn Khaldoun’s

The nation versus the ‘not-quite-nation’: A semantic approach to nationalism and its terminology Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism Pub Date : 2021-08-06 Alexander Maxwell, Jan Záhořík, Molly Turner
A ‘semantic approach’ to nationalism might focus on how political actors use the word ‘nation’ to legitimate political demands, often contrasting that word with other similar words, such as ‘ethnicity’ or ‘tribe’, which might be generalized as ‘not-quite-nations’. The semantic approach must also address the problem of linguistic diversity, and proposes that the word for ‘nation’ in languages other
