Application of the LaCl 3 (Ce) Scintillator to Fast Neutron Measurements

Abstract

Most modern magnetic confinement fusion devices feature deuterium plasma with the emission of 2.5 MeV neutrons. The neutron yield during the discharge gives information on plasma heating and confinement efficiency. Hence, the challenge of measuring a fast DD neutron flux becomes an increasingly important task for fusion research. This work studies the possibility of using a LaCl3(Ce) scintillation crystal for this. The scintillation detector characteristics were studied using reference γ sources and a ING-07D fast-neutron generator with a neutron yield of up to 1 × 107 n/s. The GEANT4 code was used for the numerical modeling of the detector response to neutron and γ irradiation. The results provide a promising outlook for the application of a LaCl3(Ce) crystal for the purposes of fast DD neutron measurements.
