Self-assembly of CuX 2 with C 3 -symmetric tridentate ligand, 1,3,5-tris(nicotinoyloxy-methyl)benzene (L), affords thermodynamically stable C 2 -symmetric metallacyclodimers, [Cu 2 X 2 L 2 (H 2 O) 2 ]X 2 (H 2 O) 2 (X − = NO 3 − , BF 4 − , and ClO 4 − ) in high yields. These cyclodimeric species show the significant anion effects on the catechol oxidation catalysis in chloroform in the order [Cu 2 (NO 3 ) 2 L 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 > [Cu 2 (BF 4 ) 2 L 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](BF 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 > [Cu 2 (ClO 4 ) 2 L 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 .
