The HER kinetics of electrodeposited Ni-W-TiO2 composites of various alloy compositions, and their particle-free counterparts, were characterized using rotating electrodes. The composites exhibited a favorable decrease in the HER Tafel slope, promoting the reaction. An electrochemical ferricyanide reaction was used to evaluate the deposit area. Comparing the composite, with TiO2, to its alloy counterpart, without TiO2, the active surface area depended upon the applied current density of the deposition. When the electroactive areas and the metal W/Ni ratios were similar, electrocatalysts containing TiO2 intrinsically improved HER.
