The effect of mixed solvents on solute-solvent interactions and bulk growth of 3,4-diamino benzopheone: A novel benzophenone derivative for NLO applications

Abstract Growth of bulk organic NLO crystals is a stupendous task in the field of crystal growth because of its remarkable properties such as better NLO efficiency and rapid response with light due to presence of delocalized electrons than inorganic materials, which could be implemented in the field of photonics. Attempts were made in growing bulk single crystal of novel benzophenone derivatives. Being one of the BP derivatives, 3,4-Diaminobenzophenone (3,4-DABP) was selected and grown as a bulk crystal by slow evaporation growth technique from a mixture of solvents of ethanol and o-xylene in the ratio of 1:3 at ambient temperature. Grown crystals were subjected to characterization studies like single crystal XRD, powder XRD, FTIR analysis, TG/DTA, UV–Vis NIR spectroscopy, Vicker's microhardness testing and NLO studies to reveal their structural, thermal, mechanical and optical properties. Powder XRD studies indicated the pure crystallinity nature of the grown crystals. The presence of various functional groups were analysed from FTIR spectrum. Optical studies revealed that the material can be used in photonics as optical filters. Microhardness study revealed that 3,4-DABP belongs to soft material and also exhibit Reverse Indentation Size Effect (RISE). SHG study confirmed that the frequency conversion efficiency of the crystal 3,4-DABP is 2.3 times that of KDP crystal.
