Abstract Temporary rust preventives (RPs) are essential in several industrial applications in protecting the metallic structures from corrosion during manufacture, storage and transportation. This review provides a comprehensive account of research advancements in temporary RPs. The review starts with a brief introduction to RPs and their various types. § 2 gives an account of old reported works as several interesting works in this area appeared before the 1980s. § 3 explains the recent R & D on RPs where a separate section on patents are added as most of the latest reports are patented information. § 4 discusses different electrochemical methods employed in studying RPs. The review ends with a short description of commercial RPs. Future scopes of R & D are also presented.
