During the 25 years since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, the global health community has increasingly recognised gender as a social determinant of health. This recognition has resulted in a shift towards approaches that seek to examine and change harmful gender and power imbalances—ie, gender-transformative programmes. In The Lancet Global Health, Jessica Levy and colleagues present findings from a global systematic review on the effect of the most rigorously evaluated programmes of gender-transformative intent on the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Building on a broader review in the Lancet Series on gender equality, norms, and health, Levy and colleagues put forward several key findings with implications for research and practice.
