Susan Vivian Mangold had her first glimpse of the US child welfare system as a college undergraduate, while running a summer programme for young children living in public housing projects in Massachusetts and a club for girls, many of whom were in foster care. She knew even then that something had to change for children and the law. Enrolled in Harvard Law School (MA, USA), she specifically wanted to work on child welfare reforms, inspired by her professor, Martha Minow, who showed her that children's advocacy was a career path, but who also realised that mental health was an important factor.
