Recent advances in the catalytic functionalization of “electrophilic” indoles

In this manuscript we have collected and organized some of the most salient and recent examples of chemical manipulations involving indole as an electrophilic partner in catalytic transformations. Indole continues to gain growing credits by the synthetic chemistry community due to the innate flexibility. In this context, the possibility to commutate its innate nucleophilic reactivity into an electrophilic profile is expanding significantly the scenario. Currently, new strategies have been developed towards this aim, with the possibility to implement catalytic and stereoselective variants mainly based on metal catalysis (copper) and organic catalysis (nucleophilic catalysis). After the initial critical review article published by the authors in the field (2013) the present monograph collects all the most recent and salient examples of catalytic nucleophilic manipulation of indoles with a particular emphasis on scope, limitations and mechanistic insights.
