On engineering strategies for photoselective CO2 reduction – A thorough review

Among the greenhouse gases, CO2 is considered to be the most important member of the group; therefore presenting remediation towards solving this problem appears to be of the utmost importance. In this paper, all the recent advances in the photoselective protocols and engineering strategies for the CO2 reduction are outlined, and the three most challenging factors of those strategies are reviewed. The first part of this review focuses on the band-gap and morphological structures, while the second part discusses the importance of the tailoring of the surface chemical compositions. In the third part of this paper, the other considerable factors such as acid-base tuning, interfacial properties improvement, and finally the utilization of proper cocatalysts are put into discussion. This review addresses many other literatures provided in this field of science, and simultaneously complements many other reviews presented on the strategies provided for the photoselective CO2 reduction, with an engineering-based orientation.
