Film is a fertile medium that artists can use to marry image, language, and music to create expressions of human consciousness that are then recreated and perceived by the viewer, as determined by their own disposition and the marks of their lived experiences. Film has a malleable character that is laden with freedom for the film-maker and the viewer to construct their own meaning of human conditions, including mental health and mental illness. It therefore lends itself well to theoretical readings, especially to existentialist thought, which has emphasized freedom in ontology, morality, and art.
