Lithium promotion in ethanol oxidative dehydrogenation over Al- modified Ag/Montmorillonite clays

The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethanol over Ag and AgLi catalyst anchored on unmodified and modified (aluminated) montmorillonite (MT) clay was studied. The results indicate that AgLi formulations anchored on aluminated MT were effective for acetaldehyde production, while unmodified formulations favored ethylene production. Characterization studies indicate that the catalyst activity is regulated by the crystalline size of the silver clusters and the amount of weak basic sites present in the support. The synergism observed is rationalized in terms of a Ag re-dispersion mechanism probed through operando and in situ UV–vis analysis.
