Highlights • The severity of childhood trauma experience contributes to lack of response to antidepressant treatment.• Untreated depressed patients show increased diurnal cortisol levels compared with those on antidepressant medication both treatment responder and non-responder patients.• The severity of childhood trauma contributes to increased HPA axis activity and higher cortisol production specifically in depressed patients who present glucocorticoid resistance.• Glucocorticoid resistance may be a novel target for development of personalised treatment for a subgroup of depressed patients with a history of childhood trauma.
