This article is part of the Central Nervous System-Related Pathogens special issue. Central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa can be life-threatening if not rapidly diagnosed and treated. Moreover, many emerging and rare CNS infections lack effective therapies and/or diagnostics. The development of new molecular diagnostics, novel therapeutic strategies, and model systems of CNS and related infections remains a high research priority. The collection of manuscripts in this ACS Infectious Diseases Central Nervous System-Related Pathogens Special Issue illustrates the intersection of chemistry and CNS infectious disease research. These manuscripts span a range of topics, showcasing novel antivirals for neurotropic viruses, development of PET and radioisotopic probes to study drug uptake and imaging in the brain, small molecules and nanoparticles for the treatment of brain-eating amoebic infections, and the challenges of treating bacterial meningitis. In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to the authors and reviewers for their contributions to this special issue. ACS Infectious Diseases encourages the continued submission of high-quality research Articles, Reviews, and Viewpoints exploring CNS infections. Views expressed in this editorial are those of the author and not necessarily the views of the ACS. This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
