Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium for toluene-methanol system including three ionic liquids with acetate anion at 101.3 kPa

Abstract In order to enhance the separation ability of ionic liquid (IL) in the toluene-methanol binary azeotrope, the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the ternary systems of toluene + methanol + IL (1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [DMIM][OAC], 1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [C14MIM][OAC] or tri octyl methylammonium acetate [N8,8,8,1][OAC]) were measured at 101.3 kPa. The VLE data were well correlated by the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) model. The azeotrope of the toluene-methanol mixture can be fully eliminated when IL content is increased to a specific value. The relative volatility (α12) of toluene to methanol is increased with the increase of [DMIM][OAC] or [C14MIM][OAC], while it is decreased with the increase of [N8,8,8,1][OAC]. The separation ability of [DMIM][OAC] is higher than that of [C14MIM][OAC]. The separation abilities of the three ILs were analyzed with the help of their σ-profiles.
