The effect of La-substitution on the energy-storage properties of NBT–BT lead-free ceramics

The energy-storage properties have been investigated as a function of the temperature and frequency in (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.92Ba0.08-3x/2LaxTiO3 lead-free ceramics, where x = 0, 1 and 3 at% La. Room temperature hysteresis loops (P-E curves) have shown a higher stability of the antiferroelectric (AFE) phase for the BNLBT–1 sample, whereas a higher stability of the ferroelectric (FE) phase has been suggested for the compositions with 0 and 3 at% La content; however the thermal evolution of P-E curves reveals a higher stability of the AFE phase with the increase of the temperature, for all compositions. The energy-storage properties revealed a large recoverable energy density (JR) of approximately 0.45 J/cm3 at room temperature, under an applied electric field of 55 kV/cm, as well as a high energy-storage efficiency (η) of 39%, for the (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.920Ba0.065La0.01TiO3 composition, with a relatively-high stability of JR for all the analyzed temperature range. Moreover, a sudden increase of both JR and η parameters was observed with the decrease of the frequency, revealing the maximum values around 0.64 J/cm3 and 60%, respectively, which suggest the studied system to be a promising candidate for applications in energy-storage capacitors.
