In the field of refractive surgery, the excimer laser has been the reliable workhorse for corneal surgery, with a large number of satisfied patients for more than three decades. In 2008, Sekundo et al.1–3 reported a new procedure using femtosecond laser technology called femtosecond lenticule extraction, which still required lifting of a flap to remove tissue (the refractive lenticule) from the anterior part of the cornea.
