Randy Shilts accomplished many things in a comparatively short career: he was considered to be the first openly gay journalist to work on a major US newspaper, wrote the first major biography of Harvey Milk, and his book Conduct Unbecoming shaped the debate about gay personnel in the US military. However, his greatest accomplishment was his book And the Band Played On, an account of the discovery of AIDS and the social and political impact of the epidemic on US society. Throughout his career Shilts had to balance the principle of journalistic objectivity with civil rights and AIDS advocacy, and this balancing act is a major theme of The Journalist of Castro Street, Andrew E Stoner's biography of Shilts.
