India accounted for 25% of the global burden of tuberculosis with an estimated 2·8 million new cases in 2018. The Government has set an ambitious target of tuberculosis elimination by 2025, much ahead of the Sustainable Development Goals framework set for 2030. Besides rolling out the National Strategic Plan to achieve the target, several new steps have been initiated, such as notification of new cases by private health providers to the Government, active case finding, drug resistance surveys, and nutritional support for patients with tuberculosis. Now the Ministry of Health has launched a national prevalence survey to estimate prevalence of tuberculosis at national and subnational levels.
