In a sense, all human vision is an illusion; the world we perceive is created on the retina and within the brain and is only a reflection of the real world. Our brains evolved in a natural environment and our visual processing systems are optimised for that context rather than the abstract geometric shapes that make up the modern world. These abstract shapes can trick our eyes and our brains, and in so doing reveal something about the nature of our perceptions. The work of Bridget Riley, a painter from the op-art movement who has been active since the early 1960s, addresses this aspect of perception and is on show in a major exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, UK.
