In western Europe and the USA, tobacco consumption peaked during the 1960s and 1970s and declined thereafter, leading to a much lower smoking prevalence nowadays. Today, despite the high addiction potential of smoking, a substantial proportion of adults in the general population and of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can proudly call themselves former smokers.
