The prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases worldwide is increasing due to the ageing of the population, and the complexity of their underlying causes remain a huge challenge for scientists. However, one scientist at Stanford University (CA, USA) is giving heart and soul (and brain) to the study of the genetic bases of neurological disease, and is emphatically “hopeful” that emerging therapeutic strategies will positively affect the progressive and fatal nature of brain disease, particularly for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
