Investigation on high-viscosity asphalt binder for permeable asphalt concrete with waste materials

Waste recycling is becoming one of the most concerned issues in the field of environmental conservation. This study developed environmental friendly alternative binders for permeable asphalt concrete suitable for Low Impact Development by recycling engineering wastes including crumb rubber powder and recycled oil to prepare high-viscosity asphalt binders. Firstly, three waste-based high-viscosity asphalt binders (WHABs, including D-Ⅰ, D-Ⅱ and F) and TAFPACK-SUPER (TPS) modified asphalt (TMA, control sample) were prepared. Then four binders’ characterization were detected by FT-IR, SEM-EDS and TG-DSC. Finally, the pavement performance including viscosity, viscoelasticity, high-temperature, low-temperature and storage stability performance were investigated. Chemical structure and micro morphology illustrated that WHABs had better chemical stability and aging resistance than TMA, and thermal stability indicated that the four binders were similar. Analyses on pavement performance revealed that WHABs had similar pavement performance to TMA, especially the D-Ⅰ and F, which had obvious advantages in aging resistance, temperature sensitivity in the range of 30–80 °C, high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance and storage stability. This study demonstrates that crumb rubber powder, recycled oil and appropriate additives can contribute to well-performance high-viscosity asphalt binder, which will be one of mainstreams for the future development in high-viscosity asphalt binder area.
