Response

The Fijian Government has responded with a focused plan and strong political leadership. Previously, the annual HIV budget was FJD 200 000 (£67 000). This year, it has committed domestic funding of FJD 10 million (£3 million), which has enabled the establishment of a new dedicated Sexual Reproductive Health and HIV Unit within the MHMS, led by Jason Mitchell, a Fiji-born doctor and HIV programme specialist, who began his role as Chair of the National HIV Outbreak and Cluster Response Taskforce

The wider picture

The significance and outcomes of all these developments are being watched closely by other Western Pacific nations. Jacobs said: “The issues behind the HIV situation here are not unique to Fiji; they would be shared in many other countries. It's a wake-up call.”On Oct 22, the 76th WHO Regional Committee Meeting was held in Fiji, which held a high-level awareness-raising side event. It heard of a prevention crisis, with overall new infections reduced by just 11% in the region since 2010,
