The naturally biodegradable biopolymer alginate was successfully modified with cellulose. The maximum adsorption capacities of lanthanides(III) on alginate cellulose range from 100.29 to 111.40 mg g−1 at 333 K and pH 5.0. Mathematical models were used to describe the kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics of the sorption process. Lanthanide-O interactions and ion exchange were the main adsorption mechanisms.
