Born June 4, 1938, in New Haven, Connecticut, he received his bachelor's degree in statistics and psychology from Yale University in 1960 and his MD from the University of Rochester in 1965. He began his career as a specialist in internal medicine for the US Army serving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center attaining the rank of Major. He went on to become Chief Resident at UCLA School of Medicine in 1969 and joined the faculty in 1972, which made him part of the UCLA community for nearly 5 decades.

Dr. Catlin was the founder of the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory in 1982, the first sports anti-doping laboratory in the United States and the 4th in the world, where he served as its director for 25 years. Through this time, he grew the lab into one of the world's largest and most respected sports drug testing facilities. He oversaw drug testing at multiple Olympic Games (Los Angeles 1984, Atlanta 1996, and Salt Lake City 2002) and helped create many of the leading anti-doping programs in the world.

During his outstanding career, Dr. Catlin also became one of the longest serving members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission with more than 2 decades of service. His work and accomplishments were manifold, and the mentioning of his essential contributions in, for example, uncovering and exposing the BALCO scandal or in identifying for the first time the misuse of a novel erythropoiesis-stimulating protein at the XIX Olympic Winter Games 2002 in Salt Lake City can only be seen as prominent examples of countless successes.

Dr. Catlin was a pioneer, a leader, and an educator, who managed to transfer his professional legacy into the hands of excellent successors. But nonetheless are his presence, advice, and personality greatly missed.
