Dispersion-driven formation of chiral twisted PAH double helices

A series of monodisperse polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with up to 25 linearly annulated benzene rings are synthesized and well characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Unique double-helical structures are generated between the conformationally flexible monomeric strands via the intermolecular interactions driven by dispersion and weak π stacking. This contribution could inspire the design of novel artificial double helices.
