Highlighting this revives knowledge of the development of eucharistic ecclesiology in the modern Orthodox Church. Among Afanasiev’s contemporaries, Paul Evdokimov was influenced by this, adapting it to real-life situations in which knowledge of the centrality of the eucharist was relevant. In an ecumenical setting, the study of Afanasiev and Evdokimov offers the prospect of theological development in the present and the promise of the revival of productive engagement that has been beset by problems in recent decades.
