Cassava starch with ozone amendment and its blend: Fabrication and properties for fruit packaging application

This work was subjected to study the preparation and properties of biopolymers from modified cassava starch (MCS) with ozone treatment. The MCS was continued to modify by using blending with natural rubber (NR)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The effect of the NR content on the physical ‎characteristic of the modification of the MCS blend was examined. The swelling in water, moisture content, moisture absorption, biodegradation and chemical structure by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer were investigated. The rate of evaporation decreased with the enhancing MCS content due to hydrogen bonding interaction. The swelling ratio was decreased according to the MCS content. Moreover, the both moisture content and moisture absorption decreased with increasing the NR content. The elongation at break of the biopolymer was enhanced by the incorporation of NR. The chemical interaction of the PVA/NR/MCS blend was confirmed by swelling ratio in water. It was applied to improve the shelf life of strawberry. The sample provides preservation of the strawberry quality in which it is expected to extend the shelf life of the strawberry. After buried, it easily decomposed in natural soil.
