[Mo2S12]2− Complex as a Precursor for In-situ Generation of Molybdenum Sulfide Catalyst During the H2 Evolution

Behaviours of [Mo2S12]2− complex being presented as an efficient and robust molecular catalyst for the H2 evolution were investigated. In neither an organic nor an aqueous electrolyte, [Mo2S12]2− was intact but it was electrochemically reduced or oxidized into molybdenum sulfides which subsequently acted as actual catalysts for the H2 evolution. The same was observed for [Mo2S12]2− complex immobilized on mesoporous carbon substrate.
