A new general method for the synthesis of C2-aryl-substituted benzo[1,2-b : 4,5-b′]dithiophene-4,8-diones is reported, which involves a Pd-catalyzed C−H bond activation/functionalization and allows for the easy tuning of their photophysical properties.
