Type-I photosensitizers have attracted much attention in photodynamic therapy (PDT) due to the advantage of negligible oxygen dependence. In this work, two deep red-emitting Ir(III) complexes have been synthesized and exhibited type I O2 and ⋅OH generation ability. The excellent biocompatibility and cellular phototoxicity endow them highly applicable to lipid droplets targeted PDT.
