In this study, an analytical model based on Hertzian contact theory and the Neuber plasticity rule is established to predict the residual stresses generated by laser shock peening (LSP). The model was validated using experimental data. A database that connects LSP parameters with residual stress can be established, and the LSP parameters that result in desirable residual stress characteristics subjected to certain constraints can be obtained by searching the database, enabling the effects of the LSP parameters on the residual stress distribution to be studied. The proposed multi-objective optimization method is expected to be of helpful for guiding LSP experiments.
