We report a facile one-step in situ Mn2+-guided centrifugation strategy to synthesize large-scale ultrasmall AuNPs with the size gradient decrease precisely controlled at the sub-nanometer regime, and further demonstrate that the sub-nanometer size differences (approximately 0.5 nm) significantly alter the non-specific phagocytosis of AuNPs in macrophages of the reticuloendothelial system, elimination rate, and nanotoxicology.
