Modulated synthesis of S-functionalized magnetic metal organic frameworks-808 for Hg (II) removal

Mercury is one of the most toxic pollutant for humanities, the removal of Hg (II) from aqueous solutions shows great significance. With α-lipoic acid (ALA) as modulator in the synthesis, S-functionalized magnetic metal organic frameworks-808 (MMOF-808-S) was developed for selectively Hg (II) adsorption. Under the optimized synthesis conditions (molar ratio of 600: 1: 900 for ALA: trimesic acid (HBTC): formic acid (FA), mass ratio of 1: 2 for magnetic core/Zr salt), MMOF-808-S with high specific surface area of 625 m g and high content of S (6.3%) was obtained. The performance of resultant sorbent was evaluated which exhibited high adsorption capacity (322 mg g) and fast adsorption kinetics (4.3 × 10 g mg min) with good selectivity. Besides, MMOF-808-S can be regenerated by using eluent consisting of 0.5 mol L nitric acid and 1% thiourea, and the adsorption performance hardly varied after 5 cycles of adsorption/desorption. After mixing MMOF-808-S with aqueous solution, the residual content of Hg (II) was found to be below 2 μg L when its original concentration was 0.1 mg L. The modulated synthesis was demonstrated to be a good alternative for the functionalization of MOFs with simple operation and high efficiency. The obtained MMOF-808-S exhibited great potential in Hg (II) removal from complex water samples.
