I’ll never forget saying goodbye to my father when I’d first come to the UK to work as a doctor. He came with me from India to help me settle in and to ensure that his son was starting off on the right foot in a foreign country—cold and wet, but with hopes of a bright future. I remember giving him a tearful hug, wondering why I was doing this. My heart ached as he disappeared into the distance on a National Express coach. I remember viscerally the sheer loneliness I felt. I was in a new country, surrounded by new gizmos, not knowing the rules, while looking to scrounge for every penny and doing mental maths of currency conversion.
