The first total synthesis of 1-hydroxbiovinianin A was completed in six steps and 42 % yield. Both enantiomers were evaluated for antimicrobial activity and were found to have negligible or minimal inhibitory effect. Attempts to determine the active species in vitro led to the discovery of a spontaneous cyclization to form the natural product.
