Smoking cessation support lags behind lung cancer screenings
CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians ( IF 503.1 ) Pub Date : 2022-09-07 , DOI: 10.3322/caac.21750
Mike Fillon

A new study reports that a wide gap often exists at lung cancer screening facilities in terms of following best practices for smoking cessation as a component of their lung cancer screening programs. Although most facilities are meeting the minimum requirements for reimbursement by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), few follow the smoking cessation practices needed to qualify for designation as a GO2 Foundation lung cancer screening center of excellence. Specifically, the GO2 Foundation requires that patients who undergo screening be referred to a comprehensive cessation program at the screening center or another organization. This service is also a component of lung cancer screening guidelines from organizations such as the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and the American Cancer Society (ACS). The study focused on facilities in Texas and appears in Cancer (doi:10.1002/cncr.34145).
