Azobenzenes can be synthesised from the dehydrogenative coupling of anilines in the presence of Co(porphyrin) catalyst and aromatic azide, which exploits the role of the sacrificial oxidant. The reduction of employed azide forms the corresponding aniline that can be transformed again into the starting azide to be reused in a circular process.
