Structure and Properties of the Welded Joints of Rolled Austenitic High-Nitrogen Steel Fabricated by Manual Consumable-Electrode Arc Welding

Abstract—The microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints of 10-mm-thick rolled sheets of austenitic 04Kh20N6G11M2AFB steel with ~0.4% nitrogen, which are formed by manual arc welding using an EA-868/20 (10Kh19N23G2M5FAT) consumable-electrode, are studied. No heat-affected zone in the weld metal in the form of a zone of recrystallized grains is detected. The chemical composition of the transition layer from the base metal to the weld metal is investigated; the layer width is found to be ~200 μm. The fusion zone is characterized by the presence of (Cr,V)N and χ-phase particles and a high microhardness. The welded joint metal differs from the rolled metal in an increased yield strength (by ~60 MPa). High mechanical properties and an austenitic structure are shown be achieved in each welded joint zone when a proper welding electrode and proper welding conditions are used.
