Folker Hanefeld, a founding member of child neurology in Germany, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2022 (Figure 1). Long regarded as instrumental in the development of child neurology, not only in Germany but also in Europe, Folker together with Bengt Hagberg (Sweden), Jean Aicardi (France), John Wilson (United Kingdom), and Edward Brett (United Kingdom), created the early training programs in Europe for this burgeoning subspecialty. Folker was born in Meissen, receiving his early education there prior to beginning the study of medicine at the University of Cologne. After his internship in medicine in 1963, he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research, where he completed a number of neuropathologic studies on brain tumors, focusing on enzymatic activities of both hydrolytic and oxidative species.¹ In 1965, he began studies in pediatrics at the Free University of Berlin Children's Hospital Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Haus. Following this training, he received a research grant from the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London that included the study of the neuropathology in children with epilepsy. In 1972, he returned to Germany and completed his postdoctoral requirements, whereupon in 1975 he was promoted to Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Neurology at Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Haus.
