Mechanical Behaviour of AA2024 Composites Reinforced by the Synergistic Strengthening Effect of Al2Cu and GNPs

This work explored the influence and the strengthening mechanism of reinforcement with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the mechanical properties of 2024 aluminium alloy. AA2024 composites with GNPs (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 wt%) were prepared by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. GNPs were distributed on the surface of AA2024 particles, which reduced the oxidation effect after ball milling. An increase in GNPs prevented Al2Cu phase precipitation in the SPS process. Co-existence of the Al2Cu phase and GNPs affected the mechanical properties of the composites. The strengthening mechanism of GNPs on AA2024 was investigated based on load transfer, grain refinement strengthening and dislocation strengthening. The yield strength of 2% GNP composites reached 229.8 MP due to the synergistic strengthening effect of Al2Cu and GNPs.
