Two tuneable emissive Ir(III) benzimidazole-quinoline complexes were developed and their suitability as cell imaging agents within both, fluorescence and time resolved microscopy was demonstrated. Moreover, the high cytotoxicity and photocytotoxicity displayed in A549 lung cancer cells promote them as good candidates towards the search of the next generation of theranostic agents.
