Abstract

This paper uses a critical pedagogical lens for evaluating North American theological education within Black and Brown communities. A Latin American epistemology, exemplified in Freire’s (2000 Freire, P. (2000). Pedagogy of the oppressed (30th ed.). The Cotinuum International Publishing Group. Inc. [Google Scholar]) concept of conscientização, is highlighted throughout. Four major pedagogical themes from Latin American Liberation Theology are applied to North American theological education to evaluate its contribution to social justice education: consciousness raising, liberation, praxis, and contextualization.
