In medieval times, humans felt contained in the world. Inner experience and outer world belonged together; all that happened was in God’s hands. Critical thinking and Enlightenment destroyed this kinship with things, and man got lonely in a strange world. But sometimes we experience a sudden, completely unexpected coincidence of an outside event with our psychic state—a happening that is meaningful to the highest degree and can even seem like a miracle.

C. G. Jung has taken such occurrences seriously and built on them his concept of synchronicity as an acausal connecting principle. With this, he brought the medieval idea of the correspondence of all things back into our time. Synchronistic experiences are at the basis of the notion of a “spiritualization” of matter, the assumption that “being is endowed with meaning.” Here I consider such a unity of the world, starting from synchronistic events, and taking dreams and popular archetypal legends into account.

Unus Mundus
