Vitrinite Components of Kuznetsk Basin Coal: Thermogravimetric and Raman Spectroscopic Analysis

Abstract

The vitrinite components from coal of different metamorphic stages are studied by thermogravimetric analysis in an oxidative medium and by Raman spectroscopy. For vitrinites of greater metamorphic development, the oxidative temperatures rise, while the maximum rate of decomposition is shifted to higher temperature. Linear correlations are obtained between the ignition temperature of the vitrinite components and the following characteristics of the coal: the organic carbon content Cdaf, the vitrinite reflection coefficient Ro,r, and the yield of volatiles Vdaf. Raman spectroscopy permits determination of the structural parameters of the sample, characterizing their aromatic content and the characteristics of the oxygen-containing and hydroaromatic fragments. Correlations are established between the structural parameters and temperatures of oxidative transformation of the samples.
