Functional Nanomaterials in Biomedicine: Current Uses and Potential Applications

Novel insights on surface functionalization strategies of nanomaterials for biomedicine are provided, including replacement, non-covalent, and covalent conjugations with polymers, ligands and small molecules. Both carbon-based and inorganic nanomaterials are analyzed. Their therapeutic, diagnostic, drug/gene delivery and tissue engineering applications are reviewed. Their potential cytotoxicity, forthcoming applications and future perspectives are discussed.
