Novel validated numerical analysis of flat coil tube with spring inserts

Flat coil tube is a highly compact heat exchanger applicable in refrigeration, food processing, heat recovery, power generation and many other systems. Flat coil tube is zero height equipment (compared to the normal helical tube) which makes it very appropriate for heat extraction from the hot zone area of the solar ponds. In this research, a validated numerical study is carried out to evaluate the thermal, frictional characteristics of flat coil tube with spring inserts. The proposed sort of turbulator is the only practicable turbulator for curve-shaped heat exchangers. The Nu number of flat coil tube heat exchanger doubles or triples with spring inserts (depending on geometry of the turbulator). It means that, in the same level of desired heat transfer capacity, the flat coil tube with spring inserts is more compacter (one third smaller size/weight) compared to the plain coil tube. For some purposes such as aerospace science, the size and weight of the heat transfer equipment is crucial as they are indicators of fuel consumption and cost of the implementations. As spring turbulator affects both heat transfer coefficient and hydraulic diameter (effective factors on Nu number), higher heat transfer coefficient does not necessarily mean higher Nu number. Other memorable graphical, quantitative, and qualitative results are observed for this system all of which are reported in this paper.
